Attracting the Perfect Clients with Authenticity & Leadership
A little Wisdom from the Way of the Horse

In order for a horse to accept you as the leader of your relationship they require that we are congruent with our thoughts our feelings and our actions. Horses are the ultimate authenticity barometers.
As the leader of your own business you will continuously bump up against challenges, concerns, growing pains, vulnerability and flat out fear! Your ability (and agility) to recognize your own emotional response, experience it and witness it with an eye of curiosity will move you into authentic alignment with right action quickly and effectively.
Horses live in the present.
An empty plastic grocery bag blowing across the pasture can send the herd into a panicked frenzy, bucking and snorting as they flee for their lives! Once they recognize the bag as harmless they immediately relax and return to grazing.

Back to Grazing
They don’t pass blame or judgement for a false alarm. They don’t gather around the water trough and discuss the “what if” it had been a REAL horse-eating plastic bag – OMG! They don’t critize themselves for fleeing from perceived danger. They recognize, adjust and take right action – back to grazing.
Great leaders encounter great obstacles and personal challenges on a continual basis. How you recognize, align with your authentic intention and take action differentiates you from the rest of the herd.
All the best written marketing copy, ad campaigns and selling systems in the world mean nothing, do nothing if you are not “energetically” and emotionally in alignment with your intentions. Your perfect clients can not find you if what you are doing and saying is not congruent with your underlying feelings and beliefs.
What’s Your EQ?
Your personal EQ or level of emotional intelligence is based on your ability to acknowledge your emotions and feelings as informationand take the time to discern the meaning behind the message. Our emotions create physical sensations in our bodies.
For instance…
- The emotion of joy can create the sensation of expansion or a swelling in the chest.
- The emotion of embarrassment can create heat and redness in the face and neck.
- The emotion of fear can create a surge of adrenaline as we prepare to fight or flee.
These are some of the most obvious examples. As you become aware of your own physical responses to emotional stimulus you will begin to discern the message available to help you move into right action around any decision you are faced with or result you are hoping to achieve.
Here is a common belief:
Attracting Clients = Asking for Money
Almost always there is a hidden or shadow belief that creates an emotion based on your present circumstance. When you can identify that belief, ask yourself, “When did I first adopt this as my belief?” “Does this belief serve my present situation?”
Perhaps when you were 5 years old you learned that it was rude to ask for money. When I was growing up I learned from the (not so pretty) language of my family that rich people were a_s#*!es. (I certainly wouldn’t want to be that, would I?)
Now anytime you have to bill a client, try to raise your fees or quote your prices you break into a sweat, stutter or maybe feel a clenching in your gut. You are allowing the misinterpreted belief of a 5 year old to rule your relationship with money!
Your Clients are a Reflection of You!
When you are not in alignment with your own thoughts, emotions and actions you will attract clients that reflect the areas that you most need to acknowledge. If we stay with the above scenario, you will most attract clients that struggle with paying you on time, ask for discounts, demand refunds or want additional services at no extra charge. Or worse, you won’t attract any clients at all because you are too afraid to ask for their business because that would require that you ask them to pay you! These clients would be a direct reflection of your own belief associated with the fear of asking for money.
Recognizing the belief, aligning with (acknowledging ) the source and then choosing the right action based on the present (not what happened or was learned at age… you-name-it!) creates authentic leadership. When you are the leader of your own life and business your perfect clients will naturally follow you.

The organic synergy of instinct, intuition and reason give rise to true brilliance. ~Linda Kohanov from “The Way of the Horse”.
Thanks for the post. I can attest to what needs to happen between horse and owner. I have an appaloosa that gave me a run for my money. We had to work out some kinks and really come together. Now we are inseparable. I can relate that whole experience to my own business
Many Blessings
Hi DawnAurora, I would love to hear how your appaloosa gave you a run for your money and how that experience relates to your business! Don’t leave us hanging…
~Schelli
Thanks to Lynn Terry, one of my Mentors, for guiding me to this post. Schelli, your statement “When you are not in alignment with your own thoughts, emotions and actions you will attract clients that reflect the areas that you most need to acknowledge” has given me much food for thought. In thinking of my ideal client that point has started me doing some self-analysis that perhaps I could need to do some more personal alignment in order to attract more of my ideal clients. Thank you.
I appreciate your observation Yvonne,
It’s a good time to take the opportunity to acknowledge those “less-than-perfect-clients” for the gift of showing us what we don’t want to continue with in our work. Let them go and turn toward who we DO want to serve and spend our time with.
[...] to introduce you to Schelli Whitehouse (left). She wrote a most interesting blog post on how to Attract the Perfect Clients with Authenticity and Leadership which had me nodding along, laughing (especially at the horse-eating plastic bag, lol!), and giving [...]
Please note: For those of you, (like myself), who believe you know enough about your business to ignore such sidelines as exploring and defining your adult self or your archetype, think again. I left a weekend retreat with Schelli feeling energized, clear and unencumbered to proceed with my business and personal goals. It is only possible to believe in ourselves when, first, we know who we are!
Hey Schelli!
Love your graphics of Cruiser, he looks happy. Glad to see how wonderful your partnership has become. Amazing how one bond can change everything.
